Flying visits and great food.

Yesterday we made a flying visit to the other end of the state to visit my little bro for his birthday. It was early but he’ll be away for his birthday so we went and caught up early.

We stopped about half way so Miss K could have some lunch and have a play cause long car trips can be killer for littlies. We’re actually pretty lucky as Miss K will sleep in the car. Anyway, where we stopped had some great play equipment and the slide was a huge hit, so much so there were tears when it was time to leave šŸ™

Finally arrived in Hobart and decided to head to the docks to Asian Gourmet on the Pier for tea. Took a quick wander to check out the boats. The Sea Shepherd’s Bob Barker was in, so was the replica Endeavour.

The boys had Chicken Velvet and Sweet Corn Soup for entree. Miss K had Chicken Fried Rice. That’s it up there & she ate well over half! We then ordered 6 dishes plus rice to share. Beef with Ginger Oyster Sauce, Singapore Lemon Chicken, Cantonese Roast Duck, Strawberry Pork (sounds a strange combo but OMG yum!!), Canton Seafood Combination, and Cantonese Scallops.

Seriously yummy food and seriously worth checking out if you’re in Hobart. We’ll go back for sure!

Blogging Conferences – some resources

With only 11 (!!!!!) days til Digital Parents Conference I thought I’d do a bit of sharing & linking up to some posts I’m finding really useful in my own prep for the first blogging conference I’ve attended.

For the last couple of weeks, Twitter has been buzzing with the topic of clothing and what people are wearing to Digital Parents Conference. Especially this dress (nicknamed the condom dress).

puts it into perspective a bit. I remember reading somewhere, I can’t for the life of me think where though, that you should dress in clothes that are you and are something that you are comfortable in.

What am I wearing? Ah, that will be a surprise. In other words I have no real idea yet but I have some clothes picked that all coordinate so I’ll pick on the day. Thanks to my awesome mum I have a few new outfits for this trip šŸ™‚ (love you mum!)

Being a blogging conference, of course tech will be a big thing to bring be it laptops, iPads, smart phones.

Menu Planning

Menu planning seems to be the thing to do if you want to help yourself save a little $$ and make mealtimes a bit more organised. I’ve been planning our meals for years & when Miss K arrived it made our life so much easier. There are still nights when I look at the plan and go ā€˜nope don’t feel like anything there’ or swap things around. Being the geek I am, I have been looking for a way to have my menu plan a bit more portable – you know, on either of my iDevices šŸ˜‰

After a bit of searching I came across Menu Planner. This little app has it all – menu planning, shopping list, what’s in your pantry AND recipes all in one spot.Works on both iPad & iPhone/iPod too

I installed the app and got stuck in. Starting with the Setup tab. I left it pretty much as is except for adding our local supermarkets in the Stores tab.

I then added our menu plan for our evening meals for the week. Breakfast here is pretty much the same thing everyday – cereal or toast, unless I have leftover mashed potato from the night before – then it’s potato scones*. Lunch depends on the day.

To create your meal plan, you tap on your day (so for example today) and you’ll be taken to the meal plan, where you select a meal type (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack or create your own) then you add a course. Here you can add a recipe that is already in your list (or you can add a recipe as you go), or select a food. In the example below, I’ve added the recipe for Pumpkin Soup to our recipes.

You can use the plan you’ve made for the day as a template, move or copy the meals to another date and even email the menu plan to someone (for example, your partner). You can also print your weekly or monthly plan out to stick on the fridge/noticeboard/wherever.

In the Recipes tab, you can add and edit recipes you use frequently and want to add to future menu plans. You can also use the Import Recipes tab to import from a list of sites. I’m yet to try it to see if I can import my favourite recipes from Taste.com.au (and then I scroll down and see it’s in the list LOL)

The Items tab shows you all items in your pantry and items in recipes that aren’t in your pantry – great for helping you make a shopping list. An awesome feature of the Items tab is you can add prices for each item, add you can add different prices for different stores (cause we all know each shop has their own price) Then there is the Shopping List tab. And if you added prices in your Items list you can get an estimate of what your shopping will cost. Bonus!

Overall, it is a super easy app to use and if you get stuck you can click on the Community tab for tutorials, help, to report issues/bugs and even request features for future versions. I’ve been using the app for about a month & I love it. I’ve even deleted my other recipe apps so I have it all in one place. You can also sync your data so it is backed up on the menu planning website – and you can make changes to everything except your menu plan online.

Disclaimer – I was given a code for this app so I could do a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

* Potato Scones (the Scottish way). Mix cold mashed potato with enough plain flour to make a dough. You don’t want it to be too wet or too dry, so it’s personal preference. Divide mixture into handful size amounts. Roll your handful sized ball til about .5cm thick, cut into 4.
Preheat frypan over medium heat. Sprinkle some plain flour into pan. Watch the flour as it will brown. When lightly browned, add scones. Cook til lightly browned underneath, flip and cook til the other side is lightly browned. Serve with butter (never marg. It has to be butter šŸ˜‰ ). Repeat with remaining mixture.

February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Ovarian Cancer seems to be one of those cancers that not many people know about or talk about. In Australia, one in 77 women will develop Ovarian Cancer in their lifetime. Every year more than 1200 Australian women are diagnosed and around 800 will die from the disease. On average 3 Australian women are diagnosed every day. Of the women diagnosed 77% are diagnosed at an advanced stage where the cancer has spread and can be difficult to treat successfully. More than half these women will not live beyond five years after their diagnosis. Frightening statistics! BUT if ovarian cancer is diagnosed at an early stage women have an 80% chance of being alive and well after 5 years. Unfortunately there currently is no reliable early detection test or screening for ovarian cancer. Pap smears do not detect ovarian cancer.

This is where Ovarian Cancer Australia can help. Ovarian Cancer Australia are the peak organisation for ovarian cancer in Australia and are the only national organisation in Australia dedicated to raising awareness of the disease, giving support to women (& their families) who are affected and funding the best ovarian cancer research.

So what are the symptoms of ovarian cancer?
There are four most commonly reported symptoms
* abdominal or pelvic pain
* increased abdominal size or persistent abdominal bloating
* needing to urinate often or urgently
* difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
Let your doctor know if you have any other symptoms, that are not usual for you, that can include:
* changes in bowel habits
* unexplained weight gain or loss
* vaginal bleeding
* back pain
* indigestion or nausea
*excessive fatigue
Most women with these symptoms will not have ovarian cancer. If you are concerned, see your doctor

Business Cards for Blog Cons

I’m in the process of designing my own bloggy business cards for the upcoming Digital Parents Conference (OMG it’s only 42 days away!!!) and thought others might be in the same boat as me and have no real idea what to put on them.

After a little Google searching I came across Momcomm and their series of articles on blog business cards (from 2011).

I also found a post by David Risley – 5 Important Tips for your Blogger Business Card. I love the idea of using your photo. And from Table of Five – Get Your Business Cards Ready For Blog Conferences!
Then there’s Blog Design Heroes’ Business Cards for bloggers (check for typos!!).

Happy Valentine’s Day 2012

Normally we don’t do anything for Valentine’s Day, not even when we where dating. Think I got roses once, maybe even chocolates. Not that I’m really worried.

We usually just do something a little special for tea. A favourite meal. This year we’ve gone Asian.

Funeral songs

The awesome and amazing Eden over at Edenland started a new blog meme thing last week. I didn’t join in last week but this week the topic was like – yes you must post about me! and was all Oh ok. BTW You have to read Eden’s blog. she is an amazing woman (& I’m so looking forward to meeting her next month) And then read the links to other people’s funeral songs – an awesome list of songs.

I was a Goth before being Emo was the in thing, so death (amongst other things) was pretty much the topic of a lot of poetry & conversations with friends. Looking back we really were a pretty gloomy lot šŸ˜‰

So, my funeral song/s. Sad/morbid as it may be I’ve had 2 particular songs that I knew the first time I heard them that I wanted them to be played at my funeral.

The first, one of my all time favourite Metallica songs. No idea why but the first time I heard it I was like ā€œthis is my funeral songā€ Guess we all just fade to black when we go

and then there’s the Gunner’s. I love this song but I’m not sure which version I like better – the original or the altered lyrics. This song was played at the funeral of a young guy I knew who died way to young in a car accident. It still makes me tear up when I hear it but I love the lyrics.

Three things I’m currently procrastinating about…

* Cleaning is a big one in this house. Most days I just cannot be bothered. The 2yo & hubby will just mess it up again so why bother. Which in turn leads to a mad dash cleanup if we’re having company *sigh* my bedroom currently looks like a Chinese laundry. On the upside, this afternoon I did get a slight cleaning urge & have done the kitchen & lounge. It’s a start.

* Project Life. It means sorting & organising my huge pile of scrap stuff. And cleaning off the dining room table. I could just plan some more pages on my laptop, or sort my photos, or search Pinterest for inspiration. AND there goes a couple of hours

* blogging. I have a few posts sitting half written. I need to finish them. Expect a few posts next week šŸ˜‰
