My Declutter 365 journey – March check in

Hello my decluttering friends. Our decluttering journey in March started in the laundry.

Here’s a before….

and an after….

IMG_3754

We got rid of old laundry supplies and things we don’t use any more, created a stain removal kit, created some decor to make the laundry a bit brighter, created a laundry schedule and a system for putting away clean clothes (something we struggle with), and organised and decluttered a pile of odd socks.

Next was creating a cleaning schedule . Now to get everyone on board and actually using it. So far it’s helping me, the kitchen is staying relatively clean. We also created morning & evening routines. We started routines for Miss K last year and are bringing them back so mornings aren’t so hectic. It’s nice to have a routine for us adults too.

Our family folder is slowly getting more information added as we go along and if anyone in the house asks where something is now it’s ”check the family folder first”.

Finally in March was the basement – we don’t have one but it was interesting reading and we can apply some of it to our garage which is a total shambles.

Afternoon Teal 2016

This past Saturday we held our annual Afternoon Teal event. This year it was Cheers for 5 Years, an Afternoon Teal at Braehead. Why Cheers for 5 Years? This year marks 5 years since mum’s surgery. In Australia, the overall five year survival rate for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer is 43%. In comparison, the overall five year survival rate for women diagnosed with breast cancer is 89%. Big difference. So it’s a big celebration year.

We had a lovely afternoon ….

and some seriously yummy food ….

There was a silent auction and I must thank some amazing people for donating – Rabbit Hole Organic Tea, Personal Planner, Little Finch, Flat Out Bottles, Popping Candy Shoes, Your Inspiration at Home, Braehead Crafts, and Hillwood Coffee Shop.

Speaking of the Hillwood Coffee Shop, they have been amazing and are hosting out 1000 ribbon challenge. The aim of the challenge is to sell 1000 ribbons for a gold coin donation and add them to our wall. So far we are just over 400. If you would like to donate and have a ribbon (or 2) added, please get in contact and I’ll send you my paypal. I’ll send you a photo of me adding your ribbon to our wall.

The finally tally is yet to come in but at the end of the day we had gone over my $2000 target. My donation page is still open if you wish to add to the total 😉

That one where you forget

I had an awesome idea for a post last night and then I went to bed, not writing it down, cause, you know, I’ll remember it in the morning…. Nope. Nada. Can not remember what it was. So today you get a brain dump.

Internet in Tasmania is slow as a wet week for some – basically nearly everyone who isn’t with Telstra. Makes work difficult. Access to FTP is patchy at best. Updating Windows, don’t even bother *sigh* For those not in the know, we have a large cable between Tasmania and the mainland called Basslink. It transports electricity and fibre. Awhile ago it broke, well the electricity bit broke. To fix it, they cut the cable. Hence crap internet for those using it. Telstra users have their own cables so are unaffected. Everyone else has to wait to be ported to the Telstra cables. We’re being told Thursday this week. *fingers crossed*

Things are going well ahead of our Afternoon Teal event on Saturday. You can still donate here. We’ve had some lovely people donate some amazing items for our silent auction that is taking place on the day – Rabbit Hole Organic Tea, Personal Planner, Little Finch, Flat Out Bottles, Popping Candy Shoes, Your Inspiration at Home, Braehead Crafts and many more. Looking forward to having a nice afternoon. I’ll be sharing some photos after the event.

I have some exciting news to share on my craft blog tomorrow.

I’ve managed to get Miss A’s photos for 2015 into her Project Life album. Now to print Miss K’s photos for 2015 and get them in her album. Then go back and add journaling cards and filler cards to both.

My Declutter 365 journey – February check in

So, accountability and all that. February was a bit of a right off :/ I did bits here and there but didn’t follow along daily. On a positive note, the kitchen is now pretty much decluttered so yay. I’m still struggling to keep the benches clean but it’s better than it was.

Finishing off January – the pantry is still a shambles but the is no out of date food stuff or food we don’t eat, our fridge is clean and more organised and the freezer is better organised (& I chucked a fair bit of unidentifiables). Everything is labelled and dated now so hopefully no more freezer waste. We also have a freezer and pantry inventory set up so we know what we have (& don’t buy what we don’t need = saved $$)

February started off with recipes. I hoard them. I have a huge pile of recipe books and the majority have 1 or 2 recipes that we like/cook frequently. I’ve scanned & printed all the recipes we cook frequently and added them to a Family Favourites binder. I’ve scanned & Evernoted any recipes we want to try – if we like them they’ll go in the binder. Recipe books are in a pile ready to be donated. The ones I use lots (& a couple of sentimental ones like the WW Birthday Cookbook) will be housed somewhere in the kitchen, just not sure where yet.

We’ve set up a better recycling & trash system – much easier when under the sink is clean. Chook bucket and compost bucket live under the sink and are emptied into the appropriate places every second day. We have a bag for recycles in the laundry that gets emptied into our large bin once a week.
As for bins, we have a large one in the kitchen plus small ones in the bedrooms, bathroom and toilet. These get emptied as needed.

Next step is to declutter all our excess plates, mugs and dishes. Challenge 7 was coupons, not something we do here so I may have skipped those days. The rest of the month is looking at menu planning, which we have done for some time but looking forward to picking up some extra tips.

Looking back at all that I’ve actually done ok. Bring on March.

Teal Ribbon Day

Today (Feb 24th) is Teal Ribbon Day here in Australia.

Each year we wear a teal ribbon to show our support for women living with ovarian cancer, to remember those we’ve lost and to honour the 1480 women who will be diagnosed this year.

No One Fights Alone

Ovarian cancer has the lowest five-year survival rate of all women’s cancers. All funds raised by Ovarian Cancer Australia (OCA) goes towards research, raising awareness, taking action on behalf of women living with ovarian cancer and to help Ovarian Cancer Australia continue to provide the best support possible to everyone in the community who has been affected by the disease.

Do you know the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer?

Women who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer report four types of symptoms most frequently:

  • Abdominal or pelvic pain.
  • Increased abdominal size or persistent abdominal bloating.
  • Needing to urinate often or urgently.
  • Feeling full after eating a small amount.

If you have any of these symptoms, they are new for you and you have experienced them multiple times during a 4-week period, go to your GP. To help track these symptoms, download OCA’s Symptom diary now.

You can buy your teal ribbons from your local Chemmart Pharmacy Australia, Black Pepper, and Coles Queensland stores.

Even our pollies (for once) are actually talking about it. Karen Mcnamara MP, Federal Member for Dobell addressed Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and ‪#‎TealRibbonDay‬ in Parliament in this video.

AND 1480 windmills have been planted on the lawn of Parliament House in Canberra in honour of the women who will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year.

So do your bit and buy a teal ribbon, host an Afternoon Teal, or support one (like mine)
